BACKSTAGE #2
Nuno Cabral completes the first sequence of four songs. “Last Memory” is now available on the artist’s social media and music sales platforms.
Now that the four tracks are ready and available on the market, how do you feel?
There are many emotions… Recording my original songs in a studio and releasing them was one of the many dreams I had. In this sense, there is immense joy in reaching this point and a huge desire to bring these songs to the stage, especially after the recent period when, due to the pandemic, there were very few concerts.
Do you have more material ready to record?
I wouldn’t say it’s ready to record, but there’s plenty of material to take to the studio. I have several songs that seem finished. I say "seem" because, from experience, I know that changes always arise once recording begins. Additionally, I have numerous ideas and drafts waiting to be developed. In recent months, I have focused primarily on promoting these songs as well as creating their respective music videos, so I haven’t had the time or mental space to concentrate on composing.
You’re now entering the promotional phase. What have you planned in this regard?
It’s a hard and time-consuming task, especially for independent musicians like me. A core idea of all promotion is to ensure our work reaches as many people as possible. You never know who might be listening on the other end.In the first phase, promotion involves sharing on social media and, simultaneously, sending emails and messages to various media outlets, including radio stations, newspapers, magazines, and blogs focused on cultural promotion. The second phase includes reaching out to curators and organizations responsible for cultural events.
Which markets would you like to enter and why?
The national market is a dream because of the exposure it could bring, but it might still be a bit far off. It’s better to take smaller but firm steps, one step at a time. With that in mind, I’d like to establish a stronger presence in the regional market, enabling me to bring my songs to the various islands of the Azores. From the region’s cultural perspective, I think it would be both interesting and essential to have greater circulation of Azorean artists, rather than being confined to the islands where they reside.
Considering the feedback received for the tracks already released, what do you expect from “Last Memory”?
As a rule, I don’t usually set high expectations. Naturally, there’s a lot of curiosity about how people will receive this new track, especially since it has a very different vibe and sound compared to the others. However, based on my experience with the previous songs, that feedback is always unpredictable, so I prefer to let myself be pleasantly surprised by what comes.
This track seems to reveal a more intimate, less urban side—perhaps more of your essence. Do you agree?
This is a clearly simpler and more intimate track, not only because of its lyrics but also due to its structure, featuring just voice, piano, and a string section. It’s not a “more personal” track in the autobiographical sense, as it’s a fictional story. I understand that this melancholic and introspective atmosphere might suggest a more personal side, but in this case, it’s simply another musical style I enjoy exploring, just as much as the styles presented in the other songs I’ve released.
Although it’s still relatively early, do you already have concerts scheduled for the near future?
Although it’s happening very slowly, the first dates are starting to come up. Two concerts have already been confirmed for the summer; however, I can’t announce them yet since they haven’t been officially presented. As soon as they are, they will be duly shared on my official website and social media.
